The Magic Flute

We are amazed what we learnt about The Magic Flute!

It is a classical opera composed by Mozart.

The opera is divided into two acts:

Act 1:

·       Tamino is fleeing from a dangerous snake.

o   He is alone in the forest.

o   He is a prince.

·       The snake bites him, but the 3 ladies (who works for the Queen of the Night) save him. When he wakes up, he sees Papageno and he thinks Papgeno saved him. So the two become friends.

·       When the 3 ladies return, they explain to Tamino that they saved him and they give him a picture of Pamina. He falls in love with her, so he went to rescue Pamina from Sarastro. Before that, the Queen of the Night gives him a flute and some magic bells.

When they were in Sarastro´s house, Papageno finds Pamina.

Act 2:

·       Sarastro wants to know if his love is true so he says that they have to be in silence, including Papageno. If Papageno does too, he will be promised a wife.

o   Meanwhile, the Queen tries to convince her daughter to kill Tamino.

·       Tamino and Pamina meet again. He can´t talk and she thought he didn´t love her, but Tamino declares to her his love.

o   Meanwhile, Papageno uses his magic bells and Papagena appears!

·       The Queen of the Night wants to destroy the temple, but she dies.

·       The story ends with Papageno and Papagena, as well as Tamino and Pamina, ending up together and all are very happy.

Here you can listen to some amazing arias from the classical opera:

Papageno

Tamino

Queen of the Night

Pamina

We then reimagined the songs for each character with a song from a current artist:

Pharrel Williams as Papageno

Alaska as The Queen of the Night

Ed Sheeran as Tamino

We then wrote new stories based on the original characters:

One day, Pamina was walking in the garden of the palace. She was thinking. She found Sarastro. They were talking and Sarastro said, “you are my daughter.” Pamino thought it was a joke, but it was not. It was real. Sarastro was her father.

A long time ago, she asked her mother, the Queen of the Night and she said, “who told you that?” Pamina answered, “Sarastro.”

Her mother went to talk to Sarastro.

Pamina was in the garden with Tamino, Papageno and Papagena. They were talking about what Sarastro said to Pamina. They were surprised.

The next week, Pamina´s mother and Sarastro talked to Pamina. They told everything to her and they then became a happy family.

-----------

We begin the story with Star, a normal girl that lives in a Kingdom. She is a ´high-class’ girl and she is in love with Torn, another ‘high-class’ boy.

One day, a person told the king that an evil witch woman wanted to conquer the Kingdom. All of the boys battled in the war with the witch, but they lost.

The next day, a card was sent from the witch to Star. “You are Star, right? You have to come tomorrow to my new palace. It’s important. If you don’t come or you escape, I will crush you.” End of the card. She wanted to stay there, but she couldn’t because she was afraid of the witch.

She arrived at the palace where the witch had Torn in jail. The witch told Star, “If you don’t give me these 3 ingredients for the magic soup for next week, I will petrify you and your love. The ingredients are in the forest. A wise man will be there and will advise you, so don’t even try to trick me.”

Star went to the forest and she met the wise man. “If the ingredients are what you want, you will have to pass a challenge,” said the wise man. “The challenge is to kill that monster tree. Don’t be scared, I’ll give you my sword.”

She tried to hit the monster, but she couldn’t damage it. She tried and tried, but was not able to do anything.

She was hungry, so she eventually got a cookie. The monster, in fact, loved cookies, so she gave him one. When she gave him the cookie, the monster began to talk. His name was Uri and he was angry with the witch because she transformed him into a monster.

So, Uri gave her the ingredients and together they made the soup in the forest with the help of the wise man. They ate the soup and they returned to the palace. They petrified the witch and they liberated Torn.

Star and Torn married and the wise man and Uri ended up becoming magic soldiers.

We attended a live concert at Teatro Liceo, here you can read our feedback for it:

·       The music surprised me. I thought it was going to be recorded instead of being live music.

·       I liked that that there was live music. They played very good.

·       My favorite was Papageno because he was funny.

·       Yes, the servant boy, Papageno (was my favorite) because in class we don’t talk about him and it was very funny.

·       I love Papageno! He's a very funny person that makes us laugh.

·       Yes! I thought it would be boring, but I loved and enjoyed it.

·       The part when the Queen of the Night sings, I love it so much and Papageno too.

·       The voices of the actors.

·       How the dancer changed quickly.

·       Yes, the high that they can sing.

·       The aria of the Queen of the Night, because I think that it is awesome the way that she moves her mouth to reach that notes that are very, very high.

·       That with very few people they did a full opera and they did it very well. However; I think that doing (the play) like this, the persons have to work more.
